My firefox extensions

With this new release of Firefox 3 I’d like to post my favorite firefox extensions. Extensions that I use every day when I surf the Internet, in a developing process, when I talk by instant messengers, and more.
Here is the list.

  • Web Developer Toolbar (Obviously). For people who still don’t know Web Developer Toolbar I can tell you that you can explore so much stuff related to the current page you’re viewing in the browser. You can clear private data, show div order, enable/disable CSS, JavaScript, Java, Cache, resize the browser and more, and every one of them can be manipulated in a very easy way.
  • measureIt. This extension allows me to measure any region of the web page in a very ease way and at “runtime”. I mean, while you’re watching the pretty sidebar of a web page you can measure it and this tools can give you the pixels.
  • UrlParams. This extension allows me to view and modify every one of the parameters that are sent to the current web page I’m actually viewing in the browser. Every one of the “get” and “post” parameters. So now, you can see and modify those POST variables you didn’t event know were sent to the web page.
  • Better Gmail. As many of, you I also work with Google Mail and if that wasn’t enough I have three e-mail accounts hosted in Google using Google Applications for your domain, for having the same user interface in my private domains as in gmail. Better Gmail gives you more options and settings when you use gmail. Some of them can be very very useful. I do recommend this extension If you work with gmail every day.
  • buttons. This extension allows you to tag very quickly a web page to your account. You don’t need to open a page you just click on a button and that’s all, the web page will be tagged. Also you can go to your delicious account with one click.
  • Facebook toolbar. I’m sure many of you have a facebook account. This extension place an horizontal toolbar in firefox. From this, you can log in into your facebook account, go to your photos, friends, profile and more with a single click, this toolbar show a little popup when any of your friends has updated profile, or status, you can search in facebook and more.
  • Download status bar. “You’re not going to download a status bar”. This is a toolbar that is placed where the status bar is. Don’t you hate when you’re going to download something and a pop up window jumps right in front of you with all your firefox downloads ? I do. and when I found this extension I really loved it. This is done just for having a minimal view of the downloads and their progress. Once opened from the toolbar you wont see them again in firefox, just in the folder they are.
  • Well, these were my favorite firefox extensions. Do you have more you think are useful ??? Well, post a comment about them.

A critical update for Acrobat and Adobe Reader

Yesterday Adobe published an update for Acrobat and Adobe Reader installations. This is because of a vulnerability that is considered as critical. This vulnerability uses JavaScript code that can be embed in pdfs to lead to remote code execution.
This vulnerability affects only this versions of the application:* Adobe Reader 8.0 through 8.1.2* Adobe Reader 7.0.9 and earlier* Adobe Acrobat Professional, 3D and Standard 8.0 through 8.1.2* Adobe Acrobat Professional, 3D and Standard 7.0.9 and earlier
You can read more about this issue directly from Adobe Security.
I hope we wont have to get use to this kind of patches and critical updates similar to Microsoft patches for its products where we had to download a new security patch for IExplorer, or Word or Windows every week or less.

Software Guru'08 Conference and Expo day 3

Today was the 3rd day in Software Guru 08 Conference and Expo. This time there were a lot of conferences related to project management, strategies for building software , technology, process improvements and more.
I attended to some sessions about, Share Point from Microsoft, Agile Modeling with UML, project management and a Rich Internet Applications conference where there were people from Adobe introducing Adobe Flex, Microsoft presenting Microsoft Silverlight, IBM talking about the web standards and Sun talking about JavaFX.
That was really good, many people were in the room, in fact, I embed some videos about that conference where you can see the quality and samples that were shown.
There was also an expo where some companies show their products, solutions and their offer to people that could be looking for business and providers.
Tomorrow it’ll be the last day of conferences and I hope I could have more pics from there. Here you have some media about the event.

Developing RIAs with Flex at SG08 Conference and expo.

Today Edgar Parada and I gave a tutorial about developing RIAs with Adobe Flex at Software Guru ’08 Conference and Expo. If you haven’t heard about SG Conference and Expo, it is an yearly event in Mexico dedicate to IT.
Last year we participated in this event as Speakers where we presented the Flex technology to people focused on Internet applications. This time it was a little different. We gave a tutorial where students learned to create a RIA with Flex Builder, they understood how flash player and flex works and how RIAs can take their work to the next level in the Internet Applications. It was an 8 hours class with around 30 students, mainly developers and some designers.
Their skills were good, really good (that’s one of the things I love), asking some questions about the integration with other CS3 products in the designers side, other questions about integration with BI technologies in the developers side and others about exchanging data with server techs like Java, Ruby and .NET, etc.
Finally we showed some examples including Adobe apps like (Buzzword, Share, ConnectNow), Flex Style Explorer, the famous Flex Store and some in-house applications.
Tomorrow the conferences will start and they have good speakers this time focused on Project Management. I’ve been invited and I’ll post a review about them later.

New Events page in this blog.

Today I decided to finish the “events” section of my blog.
What I did was share a Google Calendar where I use to organize all the events I’ve planned to attend and also those events I will not be present at.
The kind of events I will post here are events related to Rich Internet Applications, Web 2.0, product releases and almost every event related to Information Technologies, mainly in Mexico City, that I get notified.
Regards and I hope you like it. Work. Together. Anywhere.

Today I tried to access my Adobe Share account and I noticed we have a new RIA at can say this application is a mix of Buzzword, Share and Connect. If you loved Buzzword you will love this too. We can experience part of the navigation of Buzzword, a free meeting room (ConnectNOW) with a new skinning, we can also create pdf files directly in the application, we can upload, share, restrict and, in general, manipulate our onLine files with a storage of almost 5Gb.
    Here you have some images.
